ABOUT
Take the next step with your knitting in this relaxed two-week workshop. Designed for newer knitters, or those looking to pick up their needles again, this class is ideal if you’re comfortable with the basics but would like to develop your skills and take on more ambitious knitting projects.
Over the two weeks, you’ll make a knitted beanie while learning how to knit in the round, work ribbed stitch patterns with even tension, understand gauge and sizing, and use decreases to create precise shaping. We’ll also look at how to read your knitting, understand how a pattern is constructed and achieve a neat, well-finished result.
Week 1: We’ll begin with a small practice swatch, working on consistent ribbing and looking at gauge: what it means, how to measure it and how it relates to the size and fit of a finished project. You’ll then cast on your beanie and learn how to join and knit your project in the round using circular needles. By the end of the session, you’ll be ready to continue knitting the body of your hat at home before we meet again.
Week 2: We’ll move on to shaping the crown, looking at how decreases can be placed and combined to create deliberate shaping while working in pattern. We’ll also cover how to manage a smaller circumference as the crown narrows.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have developed a set of skills that can be applied to a wide range of future projects, including jumpers, vests and other garments.
LEVEL
Next-step beginners. You should already be comfortable casting on and off, working knit and purl stitches, and working basic increases and decreases. You don’t need to have knitted in the round before.
This workshop is ideal if you have completed our Beginners Knitting workshop, or have learnt the basics elsewhere and are ready to develop your skills further.
Our insurance policy requires all participants to be 18 years of age or older. We are unable to accommodate anyone under 18 even with parental guidance.

We expect that some attendees are likely to have a stash of needle sizes and yarn. However, if you don't you are welcome to shop in store in advance or at the workshop.
YOU WILL NEED
100g DK, Aran or Worsted weight yarn. Shop recommendation: Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino
4.5mm x 40cm length circular needles and 4.5 mm Double Pointed Needles.
Please bring glasses if you wear them, as well as a bag to carry your project home. You may also wish to bring a pen and notebook for taking notes. The shop can get a bit cold in Winter so pack a layer to wear once you take your coat off.
