ABOUT This *limited* British deadstock woven selvedge denim is some of the last denim woven on Blackburn Northrop Shuttle Looms at County Brook Mill, Lancashire.
County Brook Mill have been weaving textiles for over 200 years, originally powered by water wheel from the nearby brook. At its peak in the 1930s, the mill ran over 400 looms, and through four generations of the Mitchell family it has preserved heritage weaving at an industrial scale.
The Northrop Loom was the breakthrough of Henry James Northrop, born in Yorkshire in 1856. After emigrating to the USA, he joined Draper & Sons in Massachusetts, where in 1891 he invented the automatic filling changer, the mechanism that allowed looms to replace empty bobbins without stopping. It was on these Draper/Northrop shuttle looms that Cone Mills, Levi's long-time supplier wove their denim used in generations of Levi's 501s. Without Northrop's invention, denim could not have scaled in to the global workwear (and later fashion) fabric it became.
While not organic, it comes from a highly responsible supplier that also used to have organic versions however at the time of setting up Bawn we would not cashflow any of their amazing cloth in required MOQ's. Our supplier is unfortunately no longer manufacturing denim, but we managed to get our hands on their last bit of deadstock and are delighted to be able help them part with it so we can offer it to you.
